i have always loved hotpot, it's convenient and somewhat healthy. As long you find a delicious soup base, it's all good to go! It works especially well when you have a big group of people eating together.
When I was living in NYC, I've always loved Little Fat Lamb Chinese hotpot in Flushing and Japanese Shabu Tatsut in East Village. Shabu Tatsu's shabu shabu was one of the best one i have ever had. the meat was always tender and thinly sliced. Everything was fresh. the dipping sauces were light and not salty at all. I used to go so often and sometimes I'd go after midnight to catch their midnight specials! It's less crowded after midnight. If you go around 8 pm, you'll probably have to wait for over an hour!!
Little Fat Lamb's soup base is stronger than the other hotpot places, both spicy and nonspicy lovers will enjoy the taste. In the soup base, they put giant garlic pieces, scallions, dates, goji berries, some other sorts of berries, and other real ingredients, not the powder fake kind, but real herbal pieces, allowing the flavor to overflow with fresh authenticity. Once you try it, you will be addicted!
Hotpot in HK is in a whole new level! I have been to a few already but so far Pier 88 is one of my favorites!
Pier 88 - 稻香超級漁港
It has everything and anything! the wide variety of soup bases is unbelievable!! seafood is AMAZINGLY fresh. We ordered fresh fish and shrimp, the shrimp skews were still moving when they were brought onto the table. The fish, after being sliced into smaller pieces on the side, was still wagging its tail!!! it was kinda scary!!! their distinguished hotpot is definitely a must try. Once you arrive, the system is all computerized. You pick up your own ticket from the kiosk, and you wait for it to show on the TV screen. Everything seems organized and clean! Their sauces/drinks bar is ONE OF A KIND! for extra $8 HKD (which is about $1 USD), you can have unlimited drinks (Sofa, Soy milk, sugar cane drink..) and dipping sauces, and desserts!!!! Soup base was aroud $50 HKD and each dishes is around $20-$30 HKD. If you go after 9 PM on weekdays, it's even cheaper! I love this place and can't wait to go back! If you are a hotpot lover, I highly recommend their fresh seafood! Apparently it has dimsum too and people hold their weddings there. If you go on a night that a wedding party has booked half of the restaurant, the lines to hotpot will be even longer!!! Luckily it's a chain restaurant, so you can find it everywhere. I went to the one at Metroplaza in Kwai Fong.

Delicious Japanese Food - Beppu Ekimae
My experience at Beppu Ekimae was awesome! This is just like O'Taisho at St Marks in NYC. I don't think I will miss the cramped tiny O'taisho anymore! I still love O'taisho though. I just hated the lines there. This Keppu place gets crowded too but at least it's a chain restaurant. You can always go to another location! Every dish on the Beppu menu is special. The atmosphere is very zen, clean and calm. I tried some food that I normally wouldn't eat, and that's probably a good place to be adventurous! I will probably come back again to try something else!
Fried Chicken Gristles - this was my first time ever tasting something like this. it's like popcorn chicken with a little bit of crunchy cartilage. it sounds kinda disgusting but i swear, this was delicious. Try to be adventurous!
Deep fried Oyster with Uni Sauce was probably the best fried oyster I have ever had!
Fukuoka Pollock Roe Takara, Goose Liver and Salmon Fried Rice in Stone Pot took fried rice to the next level! I am not a fan of goose liver, but it was a great dish to try! i didn't eat that big piece of goose liver on the top :P
Mango Salad! very fresh lettuce!!!
Fried Soft Shell Crab. Very very delicious.
Just a normal piece of sushi, but somehow tastes better than the sushi i have had at a lot of japanese sushi restaurants in nyc!
Fried tofu
Hmmmm i can't remember what this was...i think it was a oyster dish too. :/
Casis and Orange Soda - very good. First time trying this drink. Very refreshing!
I will do more posts now that I eat out everyday! I went to see the doctor today b/c this cough isn't going away. the doctor's office is just across the street from my apt. i thought he was really good bc last time i went to see him and it was a freaking sunday! he is open 7 days a week!!! however, i went to his office at 1:30 PM, and there is that freaking "CLOSE" sign. IT'S CLOSED FROM 1 TO 4:30 PM!!! WTH!?!?!?!? haha. i shouldn't complain, he is open 'til 8:30 PM. that's really good hours!!
Exploring Hong Kong! BEST noodle soup in HK so far
Now that I have moved to Hong Kong permanently, it's really a food heaven.
Everywhere you go, there is good food. I have yet to experience a bad restaurant. Some of the smaller restaurants have such amazing food, if you weren't brought there, you'll never find the tiny hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant. Most restaurants have very modern decoration and atmosphere is definitely top-knotch.
I hope my blog will help visitors in Hong Kong!
Kau Kee Restaurant 九记牛腩 - 21 Gough Street, Central
Probably the best beef noodle soup i have had in hong kong so far. this is not a fancy looking restaurant. the seating isn't very comfortable. You have a few big tables that can probably each fit 5 people comfortably, but they will squeeze in at least 6-7 people with each table.
Sharing table is already uncomfortable, but chinese people tend to do it OFTEN during busy lunch/dinner times. I have yet to get used to this. We went there on a Friday night, the line out of the door was SO LONG! We got really lucky to be seated down within 5 minute b/c we had a small party. Service may not be the best, but you come here for the beef brisket noodle soup! I don't really have high expectation on services on HK noodle shops. I mean, at $29 HKD a bowl of beef noodle soup, this is already more than i can ask for!
The soup based is very clear but has a distinct taste. it's so flavorful, i don't even know how to describe it, it's the best beef noodle soup i have ever had. NYC's chinatown really doesn't have anything like this...not even close! Some people say the soup base tastes so good b/c of MSG, I am not really sure yet, but I didn't get really thirsty afterwards. I'll have to go back and judge again. :)
